Default setting is "root squash" enabled, in which access by root is treated as access by an unprivileged userid. * Intel Gigabit - added support for the Intel PRO/1000 XT 64 bit server adapter and the Intel PRO/1000 MT 32bit desktop adapter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FileZerver Enhancements for Version 3.20 * IDE Hot Swap - Allows the replacement of an IDE hard drive from a RAID group without powering off the FileZerver. See Tech Tips below for additional information before configuring a RAID group. * New Backup Exec Agent support for files larger than 2G -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FileZerver Enhancements for Version 3.00 * Multi-Protocol File-Level Security - In addition to share-level security, this new feature provides security applicable at the file and folder level for Windows NT, NetWare and Macintosh users. * Dynamic RAID Expansion - enables admin to dynamically increase or decrease RAID capacity. * SmartMirror - provides an additional level of data protection. FileZerver's suite of backup tools now includes the SmartMirror tool, which greatly increases the speed of the backup process by using a two-way data transfer scenario. * Tape Backup Scheduling - provides the ability to schedule backup tasks to automatically take place on the dates and at the times you choose. * Server Event Notification via SNMP Traps - expands server event notification to include the sending of asynchronous messages to a system running SNMP management software. Previous versions supported only email notification of server events. * Kernel-level NFS v3.0 Server - provides support for Solaris clients, and improved performance. * Large File Support - FileZerver now supports file sizes up to 2 Terabytes. * On-line help now includes a table of contents that is accessible from every help page. * CD/DVD Loader support - FileZerver CD/DVD Loader now provides support for European and Asian language CDs. * LCD Panel and Keypad Support - FileZerver now offers an optional LCD Panel and Keypad for interactive configuration (IP addressing) and system management. * Cyclone II Motherboard Support - FileZerver supports the new Cyclone II motherboard from NetZerver, as well as the original Cyclone motherboard. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 3: FileZerver Fixes ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * Storage Capacity Symptom: Problem creating a RAID group over 1 terabyte. Note that previous code might appear to create raid groups larger than 1TB, but those are likely to be corrupt in various ways. Resolution: Upgrade to firmware version 3.21. File systems with size between 1TB and 2TB are now supported. * ATX Power Problem Symptom: For ATX power supply installations, there was a high chance that a system reset would cause a power-off. Work-around has been to use a jumper instead of a connector to a momentary switch, which causes FileZerver to assume an AT supply (instead of ATX), and keeps ATX controller from mis-behaving. See "ATX Power Connection" in FileZerver Tech Tips section for addition installation information about pre firmware version 3.21 work around. Resolution: Upgrade to version 3.21. There is still a slight chance that a reset will cause a power-off because of a timing problem in the ATX controller chip. This cannot be eliminated with current Zerver boards. A future manufacturing run may change this. * ACL Sub-tree Failure Symptom: Appling permissions throughout a sub-tree would fail silently from directories whose name had an underscore, period, or other URL special character. Also, appling ownership in sub-tree would fail. Resolution: Upgrade to version 3.21. * SmartMirror File Deletion Symptom: During an rsync operation, files which have been deleted from the source system were not being deleted from the remote system. Resolution: Upgrade to firmware version 3.21. Files are now deleted from the destination system, as documented. * Remove Inactive Users Symptom: Admin page for field to "Remove-Inactive-Users" is not marked as needing a reboot to take effect. This was a problem because it was only checked once at system reboot. Resolution: Upgrade to version 3.21. Fixed so that changes to this field take effect with the next time that the active users are checked, about every 30 minutes. * Backup Exec Symptom: Incremental backup does not function. Resolution: Install FileZerver v3.20 release. See NetZerver technical support for additional documentation regarding this fix. * NetWare Directory Limitations Symptom: Problem creating more than 4900 directories when the FileZerver has been configured with a 64G RAID group. Resolution: Install FileZerver v3.20 release. ---------------- ZerverView Fixes ---------------- Symptom: If the FileZerver's IP address is set to a value that is not within the same subnet as the workstation, the FileZerver Status light is green, but the FileZerver is inaccessible. Resolution: Install the ZerverView 5.10 release. The IP address can now be reset using ZerverView. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 4: FileZerver Tech Tips ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - FileZerver v.3.20 Update - There are two requirements for IDE Hot Swap to function correctly. 1. Attach a single IDE drive to each IDE channel. Do not configure a Master/Slave combination. 2. Create a virtual swap space on only one IDE drive. The FileZerver will be able to recover from a drive failure if the failing drive does NOT have a virtual swap space. Review IDE Hot Swap Online Help for additional information. - FileZerver v.3.10 Update - All FileZervers with MAC address 00-07-C043E000 and above can not be down graded to firmware v.3.00 once upgraded to firmware v3.10. - ATX Power Connection - Jumper pins J21, for SCSI boards or J23 for IDE, on the FileZerver motherboard for ATX power supply installation. This will prevent the FileZerver from powering off when issuing a reset command. - User Quotas - On the FileZerver, the storage of a file subtracts from the quota of the owner of the file. But, the storage of the filename subtracts from the quota of the owner of the directory in which the file will be created and stored. User A creates a directory. User B then tries to create a file in that directory. If User A is out of quota space, User B will be unable to create the file. If User A has quota space, but User B does not, User B will be able to create the file, but will be unable to put anything in it. This will result in a 0 length file. This can also happen if User B created the directory. Directory space is allocated in chunks of from 1k to 5k. It is possible that there would be enough room in the directory to create the filename, but not enough room to store data in the file. - User Quotas with Domain Integration Enabled - When Domain integration is enabled, the quotas applied to individual users will not have any effect. All users will be treated as "Everyone" and will be subject to the public quota assignments. - NWAdmin - It is possible that NWAdmin will not always display the object details of the server or volume objects. You might see one of these error messages: Error message on Win98 w/client32 v3.20: The selected server can't be found Error message on Win NT4 w/client32 v4.70: Network error... error code 0:0x8884 This can happen if the FileZerver has been installed into the NDS Tree using IP. The workaround is to use Network Neighborhood to access the FileZerver before trying to browse the FileZerver's associated objects. - Windows NT / Windows 2000 - Both of these versions of Windows may refuse to allow a connection to a FileZerver with a different username than the one you used to log into the workstation. You have to log out of Windows, then log into the workstation using the username with which you want to connect to the FileZerver. Failure to follow this process may result in a denial of access rights or a credentials conflict error. - Microsoft Networking - If the name entered in the 'Workgroup' field does not already exist, and Master Browser is set to 'No,' the FileZerver will not create the workgroup. - Status displayed for failed drives - It is possible for a failed drive to display as Status 'OK' on the Devices page in the FileZerver Web browser interface. This situation may occur when an IDE drive has failed, but no data has been written to it since the failure occurred. - Available drive space - Drive space listed as Available or Free in Windows may not always be accurate. Start a DOS 'command prompt' session, then use the 'dir' command to display the correct information. - Deleting or stopping a RAID group - When a user is actively copying files to a RAID group, it is not possible to delete or stop the RAID group. Therefore, user access must be halted when you want to delete or administer a RAID group. - Changing permissions of an active share - If a user is currently mapped to or accessing a share when the share's permissions are changed, the user will retain his old permissions until he disconnects from the share. When he reconnects to the share, the new permissions will be in place. - Tape Backup Eject Utility - The OnStream IDE tape drives do not support a software eject. - Tape Backup - The OnStream IDE tape drive does not accurately report when the end of tape is reached. This causes the Tape Backup Utility to identify the tape media as corrupt. The Utility then tries to restart the backup. To use this drive to backup more than 14GB of data, use the following command: http://zerver/admin/tape?tsize=14G This will instruct the Tape Backup Utility to write only 14GB of data to one tape. - User Login History - On a non-secure FileZerver, only login failures are recorded in the User Login History tool. Additionally, multiple login attempts may be displayed in the login history. - MS Windows NT Clients for NetWare - MS Windows NT clients for NetWare are not supported. Please use a Novell client instead. - Maxtor ATA/66 Disk Compatibility - An ATA/66 disk compatibility issue has been identified and published by Maxtor, which has provided a utility to correct it. The problem manifests itself in one of two ways: The system can hang during a power up, or The system can hang during the first attempt to write to the Maxtor IDE disk. According to Maxtor, the incompatibility exists with, but is not limited to, the following chipsets: Intel 440TX, 440LX, 440BX VIA 586A, 586B, 596, 686 SiS 5598, 5591, 5600, 530, 620 ALi 1543C, 1533A-J, 1543A-F The host chipset and the Maxtor drives do not negotiate to the same operating mode. It is necessary to force the drive to DMA/33 or DMA/66 mode if using the DMA/66 channels. The compressed file to accomplish this change is presently located at: http://www.maxtor.com/library/main.html/ After extracting the UDMAUPDT.EXE file, build a ***clean*** DOS boot disk and put the file on the disk. After boot, type UDMAUPDT by itself to display a list of options. For example, the command line maupdt /dma:2 will set the drive to UDMA33. Additional command options can be found in this utility's Readme file. - RAID Creation Tips - * A maximum of four RAID storage containers (segments or partitions) can be created on each hard drive. * Failure of an IDE drive can cause the IDE channel to fail. If your system has both Master and Slave drives on a single IDE channel, it is recommended that the drives be configured in separate RAID groups. IDE Cable recommendations: It is strongly recommended that you use 80-conductor IDE cables with all IDE drives. Failure to use the cables recommended may result in an inability to access the IDE drives. These cables are now recommended - and provided - by drive manufacturers. - Novell NetWare 5x Login script mapping - NetWare 5x Login script MAP statement not working with IP configuration. Use the FileZerver's IP address in the map statement in place of the FileZerver name. Services Locator Protocol (SLP) will affect the handling of the FileZerver name and cause mapping problems because SLP is not currently supported by the FileZerver. - UNC path recognition - The UNC path is not recognized in a NetWare Login Script (Novell Technical Document 10054887). If you use a UNC path with the syntax \\ServerName\volumename, it forces a bindery connection. Instead, you should use a UNC path with the syntax \\Tree_Name\.Volume_Object.context\directory_path to force an NDS connection. - RAID Reconfiguration Tips- * During the reconfiguration process, partitions being added are shown as invalid until the process completes * During the initial portion of the reconfiguration process, the RAID group is not shown (approximately 5 seconds per device in the RAID) * If the reconfiguration is terminated and the recovery information option was selected, the percentage complete will be inaccurate. Example: If 80% was complete before the termination, the percentage when the process restarts will be shown as 0% instead of 80% but will complete when the percentage complete is about 20% * Size and free space of the RAID are shown as 'N/A' during the reconfigure process - Large file Support - Macintosh, NetWare, and HTTP do not support files larger than 2GB. --------------------------------------------- Setting Language Preferences for Web browsers --------------------------------------------- Both Netscape and Microsoft distribute localized Web browsers. A localized Web browser sets the default language preference to the local language. If you are using a localized Web browser, there is no need to configure the browser with the settings described below. FileZerver supports the default language settings of the Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers. The FileZerver Web browser interface, version 3.00, has been localized to ten languages, including English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese (both simplified and traditional), and Korean. Web browsers default to the user's language preference setting. If a user's browser is set for any of the localized languages, the FileZerver interface will display in that language. The instructions for configuring the two most popular Web browsers to another language are described below. Netscape's Communicator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browsers can be configured to display a Web site that has been localized to a specific language. The instructions for configuring each Web browser are as follows: For Netscape Communicator: 1. From the Edit menu, select the Preferences option. 2. Under the Category Navigator, select Languages. 3. Click on the Add button. A list of languages will display. Scroll the list to find Chinese [zh-cn] or [zh-tw], English [en], French [fr], German [de], Italian [it], Japanese [ja], Korean [ko], Brazilian Portuguese [pt-br], or Spanish [es]. You can select more than one language by holding down the [Ctrl] key as you click on each selection. 4. If you have selected multiple languages, select the one you want to use now, and click on the Up arrow to move it to the top of the list. 5. Click on the OK button. 6. If you are using Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, you must have the appropriate font set installed. Then, you have to select that font. To select the font, from the View menu, select the Encoding option. Select the appropriate font from the drop-down menu. 7. Access the FileZerver Web browser interface. It will display in the language you selected and placed at the top of your language list. If you are already in the FileZerver interface, click on the Reload button to display the interface in the preferred language. For Microsoft Internet Explorer: 1. From the View menu, select Internet Options. 2. Click on the Languages button. 3. Click on the Add button. A list of languages will display. Scroll the list to find Chinese [zh-cn] or [zh-tw], English [en], French [fr], German [de], Italian [it], Japanese [ja], Korean [ko], Brazilian Portuguese [pt-br], or Spanish [es]. You can select more than one language by holding down the [Ctrl] key as you click on each selection. 4. If you have selected multiple languages, select the one you want to use now, and click on the Move Up button to move it to the top of the list. 5. If you are using Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, you must have the appropriate font set installed. Then, you have to select that font. To select the font, click on the Fonts button. Select the appropriate font from the Character Sets list. 6. Click on the OK button. 7. You can also select the character set from the View menu. Click on the Fonts option. Select the appropriate font from the drop-down list. 8. Access the FileZerver Web browser interface. It will display in the language you selected and placed at the top of your language list. If you are already in the FileZerver interface, click on the Refresh button to display the interface in the preferred language. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 5: FileZerver General Technical Information ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------ FileZerver System Limits ------------------------ * Published Shares: FileZerver can mount or share up to 250 shares at one time. * Defined users: Up to 1000 unique users can be created on FileZerver. * Defined groups: Up to 125 unique groups can be created on FileZerver. * Simultaneous Connections Product RAM(MB) Max. Controller PDC IP Address 15 IP Address Format -------------------------------- Updating the FileZerver Firmware -------------------------------- Updating the FileZerver Firmware Using ZerverView: 1. Download the latest FileZerver image file from the NetZerver NAS Web site at nas.netzerver.com, or www.zerver.com. 2. Download the latest ZerverView software from the NetZerver NAS Web site, or load the FileZerver Companion CD into the CD-ROM drive on your workstation. The CD will autoload. Select the Install Zerver- View option from the Main Menu to begin the ZerverView Installation procedure. 3. ZerverView should be installed on a workstation running Windows 95, 98, NT, or 2000 Professional. It is preferable to install ZerverView on a workstation that is on the same segment of the subnet as the FileZerver. If you are installing ZerverView from the self-extracting EXE file you downloaded, double-click on the EXE file to begin the ZerverView installation. 4. When the Setup Wizard appears, follow the instructions on each screen. 5. The Setup Wizard completes the installation. The final screen offers you the option of restarting your system now, or at a later time. If you are reinstalling ZerverView, you may not be prompted to restart your system. 6. When you start up ZerverView, a splash screen displays while ZerverView is discovering all the Zervers on the same segment of the subnet as your workstation. The ZerverView screen displays a list of the discovered Zervers. 7. Select the FileZerver you want to update and click on the Reflash icon (with the lightning bolt), or select the "Reflash Firmware" option from the ZerverView Options menu. If the FileZerver is not listed in the main window, enable the "Discovery via Microsoft Browsing" option from the ZerverView Options menu and force a discovery by selecting the "Refresh" option from the ZerverView Options menu. 8. When the File Open dialog displays, locate the FileZerver firmware reflash file you downloaded from the Web site. Select the file and click on the Open button. 9. When the Reflash Firmware information screen is displayed, click on the Reflash button to begin the reflash process. You will be prompted for a Username and Password. Use the "admin" User Name and Password. Watch the Status section of the Reflash Firmware screen. It describes what the FileZerver is doing and where it is in the reflash process. You can follow the process by monitoring the "Status" displayed in the Reflash Information screen on your monitor, or by tracking the Status indicator LED (the leftmost light) on the front of the FileZerver unit. ZerverView begins a countdown while it is waiting to receive confirmation from the FileZerver that the reflash has been completed. While the reflash is in progress, the Status light will flash green and amber. The buttons on the Reflash Information screen are grayed out during this process, so you cannot accidentally interrupt the reflash. It is absolutely critical that you do nothing that will stop this process, including removing power from the unit. If you do, you will almost certainly damage the electronics of the unit. When confirmation of the reflash is received, ZerverView goes through another countdown while it waits to receive confirmation that the server has rebooted. During Reboot, the Status LED goes from solid red to solid amber to solid green. The Continue button on the Status screen is activated, allowing you to exit the Reflash screen. The reboot will continue to completion. When the reflash process has been successfully completed, a pop-up displays to confirm it. -------------------------------------------------------- Alternate Firmware Update Procedure Using Any FTP Client -------------------------------------------------------- First, download the latest FileZerver image file from the NetZerver NAS Web site. 1. Create an FTP connection to your FileZerver with any FTP client. (If you don't have one, use the FTP client included on your FileZerver Companion CD.) 2. Log in using a user ID that has admin rights. 3. Set the transfer mode to binary. 4. Transfer the image file to your FileZerver. The examples below use a command-line client: put fzimg201.bin FileZerverImage 5. After the FTP file transfer is complete, close the FTP connection. FileZerver will automatically reboot after the image transfer. This will take no more than 3 minutes. NOTE: The Status LED will rapidly flash between green and amber during the actual re-programming of the FileZerver. Do not attempt to cancel or terminate the download, or remove power from the FileZerver during this step. A partial or terminated operation may result in corrupted flash memory. -------------------------------------------- Updating Firmware Using Firmware Update Tool -------------------------------------------- A third firmware update option is available from the FileZerver Web Browser interface in the Admin Tools. The Update Firmware tool in the System Settings Tool Set allows you to indicate the location of the new FileZerver image file. Then, you simply click on the Update button to initiate the reflash process. The Status LED on the front of the FileZerver unit goes through the light phases of a reflash as described above. - Post-update Resets - Please review the time, date and time zone settings, and the Language feature in the General System Information tool. They might have changed when the FileZerver was updated to version 3.0. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 6: FileZerver ACL Usage ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * When adjusting the ACL for a directory in which files will be created, the owner must have Full Control. If Full Control is being done by groups, rather than by enumerated userids, it may be tempting to remove the user-owner entry from the ACL. This is a problem because the owner permissions have a unique role in the access permissions. They are checked first - before any group permissions. The ACL for the directory will be applied as the initial ACL for a newly created file. The symptom is that a member of a Full Control group for the directory can create a file in the directory, but, as the owner of the file with a unique permission field, that userid has no permission to write the file. The result is either a zero-length file, or no file at all. * Generally, a file created by userid "JoeUser" is owned by "JoeUser." However, a file created by userid "JoeUser" in a Public share under Samba/CIFS is owned by userid "public," not "JoeUser." A file created using anonymous-FTP is owned by userid "guest." A file created from a Macintosh using a guest login is owned by userid "guest."
